Acne is the most frequently diagnosed skin problem in the United States. More than 40 percent of adolescents have acne which is severe enough to require a visit to a dermatologist, and for the teenager who has severe acne, it can have a deleterious affect on his/her day-to-day living.
Acne, which affects the bulk of teenagers, and many adults as well, can be treated using respective distinct methods, with prices ranging from comparatively cheap to unbelievably costly. However, the better acne treatments are those that handle acne from inside the system, and concomitantly at the surface of the skin – since acne starts inside.
The brand indicated on the packet is not as important as what is inside the packet. Some ingredients have proven to be rather efficient for treating acne, while others appear to have very little impact. For some ingredients, safety is not an issue, while other constituents of the product tend to have some risk associated with them. Your choice of acne treatment is up to you – but it is imperative that you make an informed decision when deciding which acne treatment is appropriate.
For acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne medications, however, there is some unanswered questions surrounding this chemical. Benzoyl peroxide is a possible cause of cancer, more specifically, skin cancer, and it resides within FDA’s ‘uncertain’ listing. This means that while it has been approved by the FDA, the FDA cannot say that it is perfectly safe to take – but the FDA hasn’t determined that it is dangerous either.
Some of the most efficient acne treatments are: ProActiv, Accutane, and Retin-A. These treatments seem to work for most people, but they are not effective for everyone.
ProActiv uses a three pronged approach to fighting acne and it does not need a prescription, although it does carry prescription class Benzoyl peroxide. Accutane is an oral prescription medicine. There are many potential problems associated with the use of Accutane, such as chapped lips, arid skin, nosebleeds, joint and muscle pain, hair thinning, skin rash, intestinal issues, urinary tract issues, headaches, and eye problems. It may also be linked to depression. Accutane is not prescribed to women who are pregnant or nursing, due to potential birth defects. Retin-A has fewer potential side effect issues, and is accessible in both prescription and over the counter forms. Retin-A is also used to treat many other skin problems besides acne. Retin-A is also used to treat wrinkles, lines, scars, and skin discoloration.
If you desire to use one of the previously mentioned products, you should begin with ProActiv. If you are not getting sufficient results with ProActiv, give Retin-A a try. Use Accutane as a last resort, due to the potential side effects of this drug.
These treatments are not cheap, but they also seem to work better than the many other treatments that are on the market today. It is interesting to note that people within the United States, and in many other developed countries, spend billions of dollars purchasing low cost acne treatments which have marginal positive effect. In the long run you would be better off initially spending more money on effective acne treatments, rather then spending less money over a longer period of time with less effective results.
It should be noted that even though more expensive acne treatments are available and have proven to be more overall effective, this does preclude the fact that the less expensive treatments may still work for you. If your acne is not to bad, the less expensive treatments may work just fine for you. If the less expensive treatments do not work, and you have a stubborn case, then it is time to use the more expensive treatments.
To conclude, the most effective acne treatment products are:
1) ProActiv
2) Accutane
3) Retin-A
Given the advancement is dermatological medicine and the concomitant advancement in acne treatments, todays teenager does not need to suffer from the physical and mental scars associated with severe acne. Discuss your options with your dermatologist. And remember to stick to your treatment.
